Virtual Choir ~ Lonesome Road

It was 34 years ago that I was singing with the Madrigals at Cottonwood High School. I sang for several years after that, LD Singers while at Snow College, and then performing in church and programs. But then there wasn't much singing going on.

Mid-February of 2022, we received the sad news that one of the Madrigals, Julie, had passed away. One of the other members, Jody, really wanted to get the old group together to sing a song to dedicate to her family. With everyone spread out and Covid still a concern, it didn't really seem a possibility. But Covid has inspired ways to get together creatively (check out this popular Youtube virtual choir). One popular program for musicians is Easy Virtual Choir, and that's what we used. It's free to use, although there are charges to add creativity beyond the most basic offerings (we did end up paying a little to have some options). After tons of messaging on Facebook, we were able to gather a good number of our original group, more than I'd thought would be willing to participate. I hadn't seen many of these folks for 30+ years. I surprised myself a bit ... my first thought was "I can't sing anymore!"

At first we didn't have enough guys, so a few of the fellows recorded multiple parts, singing tenor and bass. I had been a soprano in my high school days, but I dropped to alto now, and I wasn't the only one. One of the old altos stepped up to soprano though.

The program was pretty easy to use. A group is set up, there is a base track laid down. With a computer and earbud, the person singing can hear the base track in their ear as they sing out loud, and the computer records just the voice. I originally used an earbud and Cooper's laptop, but the wireless aspect created a big of a lag. I re-recorded with earbuds that plugged in (I needed to have them in just one ear so I could still hear myself as well) and had to use my little laptop, as Coop's didn't have an audio intake. My Dell has the camera at the BOTTOM of the screen (this is a well known "nose-cam" issue), and I needed to stand to sing ... if you could really call it singing. Use it or lose it, and I don't have much of a voice anymore.

Still, it was a packed week or so, practicing the song, trying to get the parts, chatting with old friends. We finished up one for the funeral, and then had a couple more add their voices (who hadn't quite been able to make the deadline of the first rendering).  Here's the final result (and here's the first one).

It's not perfect, but not bad for 30+ years since many of us had sung it.

We searched old yearbooks and photo files, but apparently there hadn't been a group shot taken.
A few snapshots showed up and were shared.

Sad for the reason that brought us together again,
but grateful for the group and the chance to sing together again after all these years!

The Voice & What I'm Watching

I remember my mom telling me about "The Voice" ... that it was one of the shows she enjoyed. I used to watch American Idol, but it's been a few years. Now, I really don't watch "live" tv. I only watch while I workout. I had to wait until series hit DVD or Netflix before I could indulge. So I never watched any of the reality shows.

A couple years ago, the boys (Landon, Keaton and Cooper at least) did get very invested in "The Voice". I think it was season 3, the year Cassadee Pope won. While they were cheering for her at the end, she hadn't been their top pick early on. I remember them getting SO upset when one of their favorites didn't move on.

Since then, I've discovered a service called PlayOn/PlayLater, which allows me to watch anything I could watch on my computer, on the television screen (using my Roku box). Now that I could watch current programming while working out ... I have been. I'm still not live, I wait until the day after a show airs, when the network posts it to their webpage. I record it (I can skip over commercials that way), then stream it. Now I'm keeping up with a few shows ... Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, The Good Wife and The Voice.

As I used to sing myself, I enjoy singing competition shows. I like the blind auditions, and the battle rounds are my favorite. I love duets and harmonies. At times, I maybe would like to purchase one of the songs on Itunes, but they only provide the winner's solo, not the duet version (which is what I liked).

I am SO glad I have the show recorded so I can skip over all the commercials. After only watching Netflix or DVDs for a few years, I have NO patience for commercial breaks! I get a little tired of the sad, sob story backgrounds. I feel like they must pointedly ask the performers expound on their tales of woe. I do think it is a little unfair how someone who does not get chosen for the show still gets a full spotlight, while some who make it, don't even get any air time (this will impact them in the voting rounds I think).

I don't know who I'm rooting for this year ... or even if I'll stay watching beyond the battle rounds. I did recognize the very first person to audition in the blinds. I've been a fan of one of her YouTube videos for a while ... LOVE this cover!

I Love Les Miserables

For Christmas, Pammy gave Gray and I season tickets to Hale Theater. One of the productions this year was Les Miserables. I LOVE Les Miserables! I'm not sure when, why or how I discovered it. It was during my high school years. I picked up the tapes (yes, that was in the olden days, when cassette tapes were the way to listen to music) and immediately fell in love with the songs and the story. I picked up the complete set, not just the highlights, and envisioned it unfolding in my imagination.

It was my senior year or the year after ... Les Mis was traveling and was coming to Utah. I dreamed about going but didn't think it would actually happen. It was Christmas. Hanging on the tree was a gift for me from my brother Scott. An envelope. I opened it ... it was tickets to Les Miserables. I think I burst into tears. When the show came, we went, and it was wonderful.

When I started dating Grayson, we were taking a trip with his family. We drove separately to Idaho, and had several hours on the road. Gray had actually grown up on a video production of Les Miserables. He knew the story, but not the music. I introduced him to the music. I probably drove him crazy stopping the tape player and excitedly explaining how the stage had been set. Later, when we got married, Grayson got us tickets to go together.

When Les Mis played at Tuacahn, we went down to see it (my brother-in-law and niece were actually in it). We saw the movie when the big screen version was made. When I heard Hale Theater had it on their schedule, I was excited to see it on a center stage. It was really good. It's selling out fast, so if you want to catch it, you'd better not wait.

My boys don't really know anything about Les Miserables ... other than hearing me sing some of the songs (much to their dismay). But Gray, Landon and Callahan have a trip to New York coming up, and seeing Les Miserables there is on the docket (also going with Maga, Kolby and Jami. Will Swenson, a friend from high school is playing the part of Javart). I was included in the invitation of course ... but New York is more intimidating than inviting for me.

Landon showed me this skit comedy spoof ...
I thought it was pretty funny!

Hump Day

I don't watch live TV anymore (I wait until shows hit Netflix/DVD) ... which means I don't see commercials anymore. Generally this is a good thing, as I don't like commercials. But there are a few great ones out there. One commercial that has been getting some buzz is the "hump day" camel commercial from Geico. I did actually hear about this one myself, I even shared it with Gray one Wednesday (he wrote me back that he was in an ornery mood and he was having trouble staying in a bad mood after watching the commercial). I was able to recognize the commercial when the kids started quoting it around the house.  Does that happen in your family? Something funny from tv/movie/internet just clicks and gets repeated and repeated (and repeated) ...

Here's the video clip if YOU haven't seen it ...
It's just 30 seconds.

Happy Hump Day

SICK!

We didn't get flu shots this year ... maybe we should have! Colton tested positive for the flu (and strep) back in January and then just a couple weeks later, he got an ear infection ... he actually seemed much worse with the ear infection! Poor kid. I was grateful that with all the germs, no one else in the family seemed to be coming down with anything ...

Then Callahan started coughing and not feeling great ... he still went to basketball practice on Tuesday (it takes a LOT for Callahan to miss anything basketball!). Wednesday morning though, he was SICK ... I let him stay home from school, and he didn't move from the couch ALL day. He didn't seem that sick really ... he just slept the entire day. I was going to let him go to his basketball game that night, he got up and got dressed ... broke out into a sweat and went completely white. He didn't make it to his game (and the team ended up losing that night, which ended the season, so sad!) Poor Callahan was DOWN for days (a solid week, missed four days of school). The picture above was on Sunday, Dad thought he was ok to go to church ... but just getting dressed wore the kid out! He slept through all the meetings. One of the hardest parts of the sickness, was that nothing tasted good. I don't think the kid ate much of anything for that entire week (and I was quite the short order cook, ready to give him ANYTHING that appealed to him). Keaton also wasn't feeling well and missed three days of school. Hopefully we're all going to stay healthy for a while now!

In the sick spirit, my sister-in-law shared this YouTube video on her blog. I thought it was funny (and my boys gathered around me laughing as we watched it together seemed to agree). So I thought I'd post it here too ...

BLESS YOU!

School Registration

Landon will be entering high school this next year and Callahan will be going to middle school. Big changes for both boys. Just dealing with registration (and deciding WHICH schools to go too, so stressful!). I saw this video on a friend's blog and really enjoyed it (I make many little movies on my own, so I can appreciate all the work that must have gone into this). Wouldn't it be fun if the boy's first days at school were anything close to this?

Landon O'le

Landon's Spanish class made a little music video ... I guess Landon DID inherit some of my dramatic flair ... who knew? My kid is the one in the hat and mustache!

... and then they did it again ...

Wiggle Uncle Kolby

Back in 2005, Grayson ruptured his Achilles tendon. He had surgery and needed to rest for several weeks. He would sit and watch "The Wiggles" with little Cooper for company. He probably wouldn't have given the silly show much notice otherwise, but unable to get up and move around, he looked a little closer and thought that one of the dancers in the background looked like Uncle Kolby.

It was the lifeguard character. Red shorts, yellow "lifeguard" tank top, zinc oxide across the nose and a swim cap on the head. It became a bit of a family joke, and the kids would point out "Uncle Kolby" during "The Wiggle Groove" and a couple other numbers.  It probably is NOT Kolby's twin, but just the build of the body, the quick glimpses and just imagining Kolby dressed and dancing like that was enough to make everyone laugh a lot!

When Kolby's family and the rest of the Blackham's were over (it may have been for Callahan's birthday, or Colton's baby blessing) we showed the Wiggles video to the family to see if they thought there was a resemblance too. Much laughter ensued ...
